The Annual Veterinary Dental Forum in Louisville, Kentucky

The Veterinary Dental Forum

It’s Fall and that means it’s time for pumpkin spice, football, and the Veterinary Dental Forum!

The annual Veterinary Dental Forum was founded in 1987 to educate veterinarians, technicians, and staff about all aspects of veterinary dentistry.  The conference is put on by the American Veterinary Dental College and the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry. Both groups share the mission of education. For the AVDC, that includes current board-certified veterinary dentists™ as well as veterinarians in training to become dentists (residents). The Foundation provides educational opportunities for veterinary students, veterinarians, and anyone else with an interest in veterinary dentistry. Together they put on a conference that has something for everyone.

What is the Veterinary Dental Forum?

The VDF is three full days of lectures and laboratories covering the basic and advanced subjects in veterinary dentistry.  Lecture topics include the results of the latest research, case reports and presentations from specialists in human dentistry and oral surgery. Veterinary dentists treat all species so there are lecture series covering dentistry in small animals, horses, rabbits and rodents, zoo animals, and wildlife. There are educational opportunities for technicians and practice managers too including speakers on diversity, equity and inclusion.

In addition to education, the VDF provides a chance to socialize with old friends and make new connections. Veterinary dentists from around the world all get together for this special event. The exhibit hall displays all the newest instruments, reference materials and technology. The two days prior to the conference are when meetings are held for the committees and board of directors of the American Veterinary Dental College as well as the Foundation for Veterinary Dentistry. The Academy of Veterinary Dental Technicians, the overseeing body that governs Veterinary Technician Specialists (VTS) in Dentistry meets and administers their annual exam for those seeking to become members.

Both board-certified veterinary dentists™, residents in dentistry, and technicians present the scientific lectures. This year, Dr. Redman will be speaking on periodontal disease.
